Merit Retention – Florida Supreme Court

Please join The Law Offices of Nicole Hessen, P.A. in supporting the current Florida Supreme Court Justices on the upcoming ballot for Merit Retention. The ballot will ask voters if these Justices should be retained. Please vote yes to retain all Justices in the upcoming election. The judicial merit retention process in Florida is designed as a mechanism to remove unfit or unethical Supreme Court justices. Unlike a regular election, justices face no named opponent; rather, voters are asked if they wish to retain the justice in office.

Justices must stand for merit retention every six years, and in the history of this state, no justice has failed to be retained. Recently, however, a growing national trend to use the merit retention system as a political weapon has emerged. In 2010, three Iowa Supreme Court justices were blocked from retention by a politically-motivated smear campaign based upon one unanimous ruling.
